Pound Holds Steady Amid Interest Rate Speculation and Oil Price Worries
The British pound maintained its stability against both the euro and the dollar on Thursday, as investors waited for the European Central Bank's interest rate decision. This move comes amidst concerns over oil prices staying above $100 a barrel, which could curb strong market positioning.
Adding to the uncertainty, upcoming U.S. inflation reports may either strengthen or weaken the case for a Federal Reserve rate increase. The pound has been trading within a narrow range against the euro in recent weeks, with Thursday seeing the euro at 85.89 pence, showing little change.
The pound did edge up against the dollar to $1.355. Meanwhile, the ECB is expected to raise eurozone rates, while the Bank of England is not anticipated to follow suit immediately. Economic data, such as UK GDP and inflation figures, may impact future rate hike expectations and put pressure on the pound.
