Pound Plummets Amid Oil Price Drop and Rate Hike Speculation
The British pound took a hit on Tuesday, falling to its lowest level in over three weeks against the US dollar. The pound's decline came as lower oil prices eased inflation concerns and speculation grew about an upcoming interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve.
Brent crude, an international oil benchmark, plummeted 2.6% to $86.08 per barrel, continuing its downward trend since last week's peak above $100. The decrease in oil prices was attributed to optimistic talks about resolving tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran, with US President Donald Trump indicating positive dialogues with Tehran.
The yield on the 2-year gilt fell by 3 basis points to 4.352%, highlighting market sensitivity to interest rates. Market traders now give a nearly 40% likelihood of a 25-basis-point rate increase from the Federal Reserve, up from previous forecasts.
