Pound Poised for Further Gains on Yield Advantage
UBS is optimistic about the pound's prospects, forecasting further strengthening in the coming months. The Swiss bank attributes this to the ongoing search for yield and elevated short sterling positions, which could lead to short-covering.
The pound has been stable since mid-July, following a summer lull during which markets gave new Prime Minister Andy Burnham the benefit of the doubt. UBS notes that sterling's stability is supported by stronger economic data, a fading oil price impact, and expectations that fiscal plans will not disrupt markets.
One key factor in the pound's favor is its yield advantage over other European currencies, offering approximately 1.5 percentage points more than the euro. This has led UBS to predict an unwinding of substantial short positions in sterling.
