Pound Slides as Hawkish Fed Outlook Lifts Dollar
The pound sterling slipped against the dollar on Wednesday due to a more hawkish Federal Reserve outlook. Markets are pricing in a higher interest rate hike after Chair Kevin Warsh's recent remarks. This shift is expected to boost the dollar broadly, with the GBP/USD falling to 1.3509 and EUR/USD dropping to 1.1577.
Chris Turner, Global Head of Markets and Regional Head of Research for UK & CEE at ING, said that the cyclical Fed story can override the bearish dollar theme. He expects the dollar index (DXY) to grind higher to the 100.10/20 area and potentially move up tomorrow on the Waller event.
The market is awaiting Wednesday's Beige Book release and a discussion with Fed Governor Christopher Waller, who is expected to reinforce the hike narrative. The pound's weakness is not driven by UK-specific fundamentals but rather broad dollar strength tied to the Fed repricing.
