Pound Slips Against Yen as BoE Decision Looms
The British Pound has taken a hit against the Japanese Yen ahead of key central bank decisions in both countries. The GBP/JPY exchange rate is currently trading at around 217.84, down 0.23% on the day.
This decline comes as the UK's economy faces pressure from lower government bond yields and the impact of recent energy shocks on inflation. Despite this, the Bank of England (BoE) is widely expected to leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75%, according to analysts.
ING analyst Francesco Pesole noted that if inflation remains contained, the BoE will likely keep rates steady for the rest of the year. However, with markets pricing in a potential 38bp tightening by year-end, there is still some uncertainty surrounding the Pound's performance.
The Japanese Yen, on the other hand, continues to struggle due to Japan's low interest rates and reliance on imported energy. The Bank of Japan (BoJ) is also expected to keep its policy rate unchanged at 1% when it announces its decision on Friday.
