Pound Slumps as Strong Jobless Claims Boost Dollar
The British pound has declined against the US dollar following stronger-than-expected US jobless claims data. According to the US Department of Labor, initial jobless claims for the week ending [Date] came in at 213,000, below the forecast of 220,000 and down from the previous week's revised figure of 215,000.
This indicates continued resilience in the US labor market, giving the Federal Reserve more room to keep interest rates higher for longer. The stronger labor market data has added to the narrative that the US economy remains robust, potentially prompting Fed officials to maintain a restrictive policy stance and lift the dollar.
The solid jobless claims data has reduced the urgency for aggressive easing, supporting the dollar's rally in the wake of the data release. As a result, the US dollar index rose 0.2% to 104.50, while GBP/USD fell to 1.2650, down from 1.2700 earlier in the session.
