Pound Soars Near Six-Month High Amid BoE Rate Hike Expectations
The British pound continued its strong run against the US dollar on Tuesday, reaching near six-month highs due to expectations of interest rate hikes by the Bank of England. According to LSEG-compiled data, the pound has seen a significant increase over the past four weeks.
Analysts and economists, however, are divided on whether the BoE will raise interest rates this year. Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING, expects no hikes and predicts a decline in the currency towards the end of the year, with a potential drop to 87 pence, which would be a 2% decrease from Tuesday's trading levels.
The pound is also being underpinned by concerns over sticky inflation and soaring government debt. The UK Gilt yields are among the highest among developed economies, and investors will be watching for any plans by the Andy Burnham government to fund its fiscal policies through more borrowing or tax hikes.
