Pound Steadies Amid Hawkish BoE Tone, Policy Divergence
The British pound has stabilized after a slight dip in early trading on Friday, and is still poised to post a modest weekly gain. This resilience comes despite a pullback in the GBP/USD pair, which slipped from recent highs as profit-taking emerged.
The pound's upward momentum has been supported by a more hawkish tone from the Bank of England, signaling that interest rates may need to stay higher for longer to curb persistent inflation. UK inflation data released earlier in the week showed it remaining above the central bank's 2% target, reinforcing market bets that the BoE will hold off on rate cuts in the near term.
This policy divergence between the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve is creating a favorable environment for the pound, with traders now focusing on key support and resistance levels. The GBP/USD pair was seen trading around 1.2700, down 0.2% on the day but still up roughly 0.4% for the week.
