Pound Steady After ECB Leaves Rates Unchanged Amid Inflation Fears
The Pound to Euro exchange rate remained steady on Thursday after the European Central Bank's (ECB) policy announcement left interest rates unchanged at 2.25%. ECB President Christine Lagarde warned that higher energy prices may keep inflation above target until mid-2027, suggesting policymakers might need to maintain a restrictive monetary policy stance.
Lagarde also acknowledged the fragile economic growth outlook, which tempered expectations for additional rate increases and left the single currency without a clear catalyst for gains. The Pound traded with little conviction as UK government borrowing costs continued to rise, with the yield on the 10-year gilt climbing above 5% - its highest level in over two months.
The policies announced by Prime Minister Andy Burnham earlier this week have been welcomed by businesses and consumers, but markets remain cautious about how the government intends to finance the package without straying from Labour's fiscal rules. Friday's PMI data releases are expected to be a major driver for the Pound to Euro exchange rate.
