Pound Sterling Soars as UK Economy Defies Expectations with Strong Growth
The UK economy has defied expectations by growing faster than anticipated in July, with a month-on-month increase of 0.4%. This news has sent the pound sterling soaring against both the euro and dollar.
Sanjay Raja, Chief UK Economist at Deutsche Bank, describes the growth as 'AI-inspired investment boom' driven by companies racing to tool up for the new age. Professional services and IT sectors have led this growth, with signs of AI capital expenditure emerging even more clearly.
The pound-to-euro exchange rate saw a noticeable rise from 1.1635 to 1.1650 in the minutes following the release, while the pound-to-dollar exchange rate rose slightly less, from 1.3510 to 1.3520.
This data aligns with market views that several interest rate increases are likely, putting pressure on the Bank of England to raise rates in September and beyond.
However, experts caution that despite the strong growth figures, there remain potential banana peels that could impact the pound's performance. Global bond markets are under severe pressure, pushing up borrowing costs, while the UK ten-year yield surged to its highest level in 19 years due to global sell-offs and anticipated budget changes.
