Pound Surges as New Government Boosts Investor Confidence

The British pound has gained more than 1% against the US dollar in July, reaching just above $1.34 by month's end. This gain is attributed to investors reassessing the Bank of England's latest policy decision and welcoming easing political uncertainty following the appointment of a new UK prime minister.

The new government has pledged to maintain fiscal discipline, which has boosted investor confidence. In contrast, the Bank of England voted 6-3 to keep interest rates unchanged, with three policymakers advocating for a rate hike.

However, Governor Andrew Bailey downplayed expectations of an imminent tightening cycle, stating that the disinflation process remains on track. Some officials have suggested that rate cuts could be reconsidered if the Iran conflict subsides.
