Pound Surges as Weak US Retail Sales Deepen Dollar Slide
The British pound has strengthened against the US dollar as weak US retail sales data deepened the dollar's slide. The disappointing March retail sales figure, released earlier this week, came in below market forecasts and signaled a potential slowdown in consumer spending.
As a result, traders adjusted their expectations for Federal Reserve policy, with futures markets now pricing in a higher probability of a rate cut by September. This has led to a selloff in the dollar index, which fell to its lowest level in several weeks, providing a tailwind for the pound.
The UK's relatively more optimistic economic outlook has also contributed to the pound's strength against the dollar. The Bank of England has signaled that it may ease policy later this year, but the timing remains uncertain and has provided some support for sterling.
