Pound Surges on Hawkish Bank of England Comments

Hawkish signals from the Bank of England have boosted the pound against the US dollar. The GBP/USD pair rose to around 1.3530 in early Asian trading on Friday, as markets await the release of non-farm payrolls data.

The Bank's Chief Economist, Huw Pill, stated that raising interest rates now could reduce the likelihood of having to implement more aggressive tightening down the road to bring inflation under control.

Pill emphasized that an early rate hike would not signal the start of a prolonged, aggressive hiking cycle. The core message is that the Bank places greater emphasis on the risk of second-round transmission effects in inflation.

UK economic growth still faces significant uncertainty, and if rising energy prices continue to push inflation higher, the Bank may come under pressure to recalibrate the balance between economic growth and price stability.
