PPI Inflation in Line with Expectations as US Dollar Gains Strength

The US Producer Price Index (PPI) inflation data for August was released and it's in line with expectations. The PPI rose by 0.4% month-over-month, which is a slight increase from the previous 0.1%. However, core PPI, which excludes volatile components such as energy and food, increased by only 0.2%, falling short of the forecasted 0.3%

On an annual basis, PPI accelerated to 5.4%, exceeding expectations of 5.3% and rising sharply from 4.8%. Core PPI also rose to 4.6% year-over-year, matching forecasts but increasing from 4.3% previously.

The data points to persistent inflationary pressure, particularly in annual terms, which may lead the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates higher for longer or even raise them further. This would likely support the US dollar while putting downward pressure on equities.
