Qantas Exits Japan: Jetstar to Rebrand Under New Ownership
Australia's Qantas is withdrawing from its stake in Jetstar Japan, its Japanese subsidiary. The company will sell its 33.32% share to a share buyback program for approximately 8.2 billion yen (€48 million), equivalent to around A$115 million. This move follows the non-binding letter of intent published by the parties involved in February 2026.
The exit of Qantas will result in Jetstar Japan dropping its brand name and operating under a new identity in the Japanese market. The company's ownership structure is changing, with Japan Airlines and Tokyo Century retaining their stakes while welcoming the Development Bank of Japan as a new shareholder. The sale is expected to be completed by June 2027.
Qantas plans to reinvest the funds from the sale into its domestic and intercontinental operations. This includes upgrading its fleet, modernizing cabin interiors, and expanding long-haul routes from Australia. By focusing on core business activities, Qantas aims to reduce financial exposure in investments where it doesn't hold a majority stake.
