Qantas Exits Jetstar Japan Amid S67 Million Share Buyback Deal
Qantas Airways has announced its plans to exit Jetstar Japan in an S$67 million share buyback deal. As part of the agreement, Jetstar Japan will purchase Qantas' 33.32% stake in the budget carrier for approximately S$66.77 million or 8.2 billion yen.
The deal paves the way for Jetstar Japan to come under Japanese ownership and rebrand under a new name. Japan Airlines and Tokyo Century will retain their respective stakes, while the Development Bank of Japan will join as a new shareholder.
This move will allow Qantas to redirect capital towards its operations in Australia and internationally. The share buyback is expected to generate an estimated gain of around A$115 million (S$103.14 million) for Qantas in items outside underlying earnings, predominantly in 2027.
