QNB: Cyclical Forces Underpin US Dollar Resilience Amid Structural Headwinds
Qatar National Bank (QNB) has released its latest weekly economic commentary, suggesting that while structural headwinds are weighing on the US dollar's long-term outlook, cyclical factors remain dominant in driving its resilience.
The report notes that the US dollar faces significant pressure from structural headwinds, including an overvalued real exchange rate, persistent fiscal and trade deficits, and the gradual diversification of international reserves by central banks. However, QNB attributes the currency's continued strength to cyclical factors, primarily driven by interest rate differentials.
According to QNB, interest rates play a crucial role in influencing global capital flows and portfolio allocation. The bank points out that when US interest rates rise relative to those in other advanced economies, dollar-denominated assets become more attractive, increasing demand for the currency.
The report highlights three key factors supporting the US dollar's strength: interest rate differentials, sustained foreign demand for US financial assets due to AI-driven investment, and continued US economic outperformance. QNB notes that these factors are expected to remain significant sources of strength for the currency in the near term.
