Quebec Stands Firm Against Trade War with $1.5B Economic Boost
Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette announced measures to promote buying locally in response to the escalating trade war between Canada and the United States. The government's cabinet met to address the issue, with Frechette taking a break from her provincial election campaign to return to her role as premier.
The measures aim to inject $1.5 billion into the Quebec economy over the next four months. They include requiring government contracts to favor local businesses and granting a 15% preferential margin based on value added in the province or Canada.
Frechette said that Quebec is facing a bully, but has the choice to either kneel down or stand tall. The Canadian government's retaliatory tariffs on American goods took effect on Monday after the breakdown of talks with the United States.
