Quebec Tourism Surges as Canadians Avoid US Travel

Quebec's economy is getting a boost from domestic tourism, driven by a decline in cross-border travel to the U.S. According to a report from Desjardins Group, while traditional drivers of Quebec's economy are slowing down, tourism spending is supporting economic activity in many parts of the province.

The report noted that Canadian trips to the U.S. were down 25% in May compared to two years ago, but cross-border trips from Quebec specifically were down 33%, suggesting Quebecers are avoiding travel to the U.S. in larger numbers.

As a result, domestic tourism is increasing, and Desjardins estimates that if 'a third of the tourist dollars typically spent in the U.S. were instead spent in Quebec', the province could see nearly $1 billion in added economic activity.
