Quebec's Independence Movement Slows Amid Trump Trade Wars
Quebec's separatist movement has seen its lowest level of support in decades as the province's economy struggles under US President Donald Trump's trade policies. According to a recent poll, only about 30% of Quebecers now favor independence from Canada.
A steel factory in Quebec lost over a third of its orders for bolts and fasteners after Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian steel last year, leading the company to freeze hiring and lay off dozens of workers.
Despite this economic hardship, some separatists argue that independence remains crucial for Quebec's cultural and linguistic identity. However, others acknowledge the impact of Trump's policies and say a national response is needed.
Vincent Rainville, a fourth-generation Quebec dairy farmer, said 'It's not just Quebec, it's all of Canada and all our industries that have been affected.'
