Rabobank Sees Stable USD/JPY Ahead, Cites Risk from Japan's Budget Talks
Rabobank's Senior FX Strategist Jane Foley spoke about the current state of the Japanese Yen (JPY) and its relationship to the US Dollar (USD). She emphasized that government spending plans, changing demand for long-dated debt, and Treasury Secretary Bessent's buyback plan have influenced the value of both currencies.
The recent announcement by Treasury Secretary Bessent of a buyback plan led to a decline in the USD. As a result, the USD/JPY pair moved further away from its important psychological level at 160.
Rabobank maintains a 3-month forecast for USD/JPY of 158, but warns that there may be attempts at upside movement in the near-term. The strategists believe that the USD will continue to benefit from its status as a safe haven currency due to its dominant position within the global payment system.
The Bank of Japan (BoJ) is expected to accelerate its rate hikes, which could provide support for the JPY. However, upcoming budget talks in Japan later this year may have a significant impact on market sentiment and potentially affect the value of the JPY.
