Rabobank Sees Sterling Vulnerability Amid UK Budget Risks
Rabobank's Senior FX Strategist Jane Foley warns that the British Pound (GBP) may be vulnerable to weakness due to upcoming budget talks and high debt levels in the UK. According to Foley, foreign investors hold around 30% of UK gilts, making them more reactive to domestic news and increasing the likelihood of bond market jitters spilling over into the exchange rate.
Foley points out that the proportion of UK government debt owned by foreign investors is relatively high compared to other G10 countries. This increased sensitivity to budget concerns makes the GBP more susceptible to market volatility, particularly in the lead-up to the October 28 UK budget.
Rabobank expects EUR/GBP to be biased higher towards 0.87 on a 3-month view as a result of these factors. While Foley's views are not necessarily contrarian, they do highlight the potential risks and uncertainties associated with the upcoming budget talks.
