Rajan Co-Leads US Fed Task Force on Balance Sheet Amid Global Policy Shift
Former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has been appointed to co-lead a US Federal Reserve task force evaluating its massive $6.7 trillion balance sheet. The group, formed under the direction of Fed Chair Jerome Powell, will analyze the central bank's current financial footprint and examine long-term strategies for reducing it.
The appointment comes at a time when global markets are evaluating how major central banks might transition away from extended periods of easy money policies that followed recent economic challenges. A reduction in the balance sheet could lead to tighter liquidity in international markets, potentially causing increased volatility in foreign institutional investment flows into emerging economies like India.
While a smaller Fed balance sheet may contribute to a more stable and predictable long-term economic environment by reducing distortions in asset prices and risk premiums across global markets, the pace of this transition will be crucial. A sudden or aggressive shift in policy could pressure equity and bond markets in emerging economies.
