Rand Falls Despite Record Trade Surplus in South Africa
South Africa's rand saw a decline of approximately 0.6% against the US dollar, despite June's trade surplus exceeding expectations.
The data from South African Revenue Service revealed a significant improvement in the country's trade balance for June, with a surplus of 17.75 billion rand, far higher than the estimated 3.45 billion rand.
Investors often look to emerging-market currencies, including the rand, to track shifts in US interest rates and investors' willingness to take on risk.
Lara Hodes, an economist from Investec, pointed out that rising petroleum imports and exchange-rate volatility could lead to a higher import bill, potentially offsetting the positive impact of the strong trade surplus.
