Rand Holds Firm Amid Wait for Key Economic Indicators
The South African rand maintained its steady pace on Thursday morning, trading around 16.04 per US dollar as investors waited for key economic indicators.
Although the US dollar eased by 0.2% against a basket of major peers ahead of the release of the highly anticipated nonfarm payrolls data, the rand remained relatively unaffected.
The jobs report is crucial in setting expectations for the Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions, which can have a ripple effect on global interest rates and risk appetite, two significant drivers of emerging-market currencies like the rand.
Locally, traders are keeping an eye on South Africa's August S&P Global whole-economy purchasing managers' index (PMI), due to be released at 0715 GMT. A weak PMI reading could indicate a soft start to the second half of the year, leading investors to demand more compensation for growth risk.
