Rand Strengthens Ahead of Inflation Data Release
The South African rand strengthened on Monday by about 0.4% to 16.1425 per US dollar as investors looked ahead to this week's inflation data release.
Economists polled by Reuters expect July inflation to come in at 4.5%, a decrease from the 5.0% recorded in June, which was largely driven by rising transport costs.
Nedbank, one of South Africa's largest banks, is slightly more optimistic with its forecast of 4.3%, citing lower fuel prices as a factor that should ease inflationary pressures.
The difference between these forecasts matters because it can influence the Reserve Bank's interest rate decisions, which in turn affects demand for local bonds and the currency.
