Rand Strengthens as Iran-US Talks Ease Geopolitical Tensions

The South African rand strengthened on Monday after easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a weaker US dollar helped markets recover from last week's volatility following the Sarb's decision to leave interest rates unchanged.

Investec chief economist Annabel Bishop said the sell-off was largely driven by markets unwinding expectations of a rate increase, which did not materialize. The rand had briefly weakened to R16.98 against the US dollar on Friday but recovered to around R16.70 on Monday morning.

Bishop noted that the decline in the US dollar also helped stabilize the rand, with the US dollar index declining from 100.69 to 91.44 on Monday. However, she cautioned that uncertainty remained elevated and the rand was still vulnerable to shifts in global investor sentiment.
