Rand Surges as Gold Prices Climb and Dollar Eases
The South African rand strengthened on Friday as gold prices rose and the US dollar eased. The rand reached about 16.0550 per US dollar in early London trading, according to Reuters.
A weaker greenback often supports gold because it makes the metal cheaper for buyers using other currencies. This matters for South Africa because when gold climbs, investors expect stronger export earnings and more foreign-currency inflows, which can increase demand for rands.
The US Treasury's plan to double repurchases of longer-dated government bonds next quarter also added to the upbeat mood. By taking some supply out of the market, buybacks can help steady bond prices and encourage a broader 'risk-on' tone, which usually favors higher-yielding emerging-market currencies.
