The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is being closely watched to see if it will raise interest rates for a fourth time this year, according to major banks. Economists from Commonwealth Bank warn that the RBA is facing a 'new economic reality' with structurally higher interest rates.

Market data now prices in a 60% chance of a rate hike as early as September 29, and even a fifth spike is being floated. The cash rate target is expected to reach 4.60% on September 29, according to revised forecasts from financial institutions including NAB, Deutsche Bank, UBS, and Morgan Stanley.

CBA head of Australian economics Belinda Allen stated that 'a hike is waiting in the wings.' Canstar data insights director Sally Tindall noted that Macquarie has hiked its fixed rates by as much as 0.30 percentage points, indicating it expects the RBA's next move to be upward.
