Rate Hike Expectations Soar as Inflation and Geopolitics Combine
The Federal Reserve's upcoming rate meeting is generating significant market attention, as inflation concerns and geopolitical tensions continue to intensify. The latest U.S. inflation data showed a 0.4% month-on-month increase in consumer prices, far surpassing July's 0.1%, and the year-over-year rise remained at 3.4%. Core CPI, excluding food and energy, rose 0.3% month-on-month, its largest increase in four months.
The Federal Reserve Watch tool indicates that investors' probability of a 25 basis point rate hike this week has surged from about 67% before the data release to around 87%. Most analysts believe that accelerating inflation and stabilization in previous employment data will lay the groundwork for further tightening in October or December. Gold prices have rebounded after a brief pullback, but remain under pressure due to strengthened Fed rate hike expectations.
Ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts, including drone attacks on Saudi Arabia's east-west oil pipeline, have pushed oil prices higher and intensified uncertainty about interest rate outlooks. If the situation eases significantly, a drop in oil prices would ease inflation concerns and reduce expectations of rate hikes, making it easier for gold to gain upside potential.
