Rate Hike Odds Surge as Inflation Looms Ahead of FOMC Meeting
Investors are bracing for potential rate hikes as the Federal Reserve prepares to meet on September 16. Despite a strong stock market performance this year, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 11%, the S&P 500 up 13%, and the Nasdaq Composite up 14%, inflation remains a pressing concern.
The CME Group's FedWatch Tool shows that the odds of a quarter-point rate hike at the FOMC meeting have risen to 60.6% as of September 8, from 44.4% on August 7.
Kevin Warsh, Fed Chair, emphasized the importance of price stability in his recent comments, stating 'The Fed's predominant focus right now should be on prices.' He also emphasized that inflation needs to move towards the central bank's 2% target 'at sufficient speed.'
