RBA Considers Rate Hike to Combat Inflation Risks Amid Middle East Tensions

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has released minutes from its August meeting, revealing that members considered hiking interest rates to pre-emptively combat potential inflation risks. The board is monitoring several factors that could impact rates, including the Middle East conflict and a potentially larger-than-anticipated AI boom.

Despite leaving the cash rate unchanged at 4.35 per cent, the RBA noted that inflation was lower than forecast and the jobs market was softening faster than expected. However, the board is concerned about upside risks to the inflation forecast, with several members judging it 'quite possible' that these risks would crystallize.

ANZ senior rates strategist Jack Chambers described the minutes as slightly hawkish, with more emphasis on upside inflation risks and less focus on activity slowdown. The RBA believes most Australian households and firms are well placed to manage financial pressures, but acknowledged that some may struggle due to falling house prices and higher borrowing costs.

The board decided to wait for further data on inflation, the labour market, and GDP figures before making any decisions. Chambers noted that July's inflation data will be an important test ahead of the November meeting, which is still a possibility for a rate hike.
