RBA Faces Inflation Risks as Oil Prices Soar
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is facing a challenging situation as it prepares for its next interest rate decision, according to RBA chief economist Sarah Hunter. The bank is concerned about rising inflation pressures from the Middle East and globally.
One factor contributing to these pressures is the price of oil, which broke the $US100 a barrel barrier last week due to escalating tensions in the region. This has led to higher petrol and diesel costs that will flow through to households and businesses.
The RBA is also worried about the broader global environment becoming more inflationary, with tech component prices rising due to the AI boom. 'Anyone who's bought a new iPhone recently might have noticed that the price went up quite a bit,' Dr Hunter said. 'That's actually true for consumer electronics more generally, and that's directly related to the AI boom; those chips that are in all of our electronic products are in high demand right now.' The iPhone Duo, starting at $3499, is commanding a significant mark-up over previous models.
