RBA Governor Unveils Central Banks' Artificial Intelligence Strategy
Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullock has outlined a three-part strategy to modernize statistical frameworks at central banks. The initiative aims to strengthen official statistical accuracy and establish operational guardrails for artificial intelligence usage. This policy update expands the mandate of the Irving Fisher Committee, which addresses rapid shifts in global financial technology and data collection.
The three-point strategy targets artificial intelligence adoption, modernized statistical methods, and stricter governance frameworks across international institutions. According to Governor Bullock, 'the objective is not to replace official statistics but to strengthen them.' The framework directs central bank leaders to evaluate operational opportunities and technical risks associated with AI systems.
The policy initiative aims to build trusted data systems as official institutions evaluate emerging computational tools. Central banks internationally continue to update analytical tools to process non-traditional financial indicators alongside standard macroeconomic reporting.
