RBA Holds Interest Rates Steady Amid Inflation Concerns
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) kept its cash rate steady at 4.35% for another meeting, despite concerns about inflation. Governor Michele Bullock hinted that a future rate hike might still be necessary to address these concerns.
In the post-meeting briefing, Bullock mentioned that the RBA considered factors like the re-escalation of Middle East tensions and unexpected changes in the housing market when making its decision. Despite inflation coming in below forecasts, market expectations for a rate hike persist due to potential impacts from rising oil prices.
The RBA had already raised rates by 75 basis points earlier this year to combat persistent inflation caused by increasing energy costs. According to updated RBA forecasts, inflation might return to its target range of 2% to 3% by next year's latter half, but potential economic shocks could influence further policy tightening.
