RBA Holds Steady Amid Weakening Economic Data
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has chosen to hold steady on interest rates despite weak economic data. The RBA's Monetary Policy Board unanimously decided to maintain the cash rate, citing marginal improvements in domestic inflation and labor market data.
However, the bank retained its 'hawkish option' by stating it is prepared to increase the cash rate further if upside risks to inflation materialize. This stance contrasts with the Federal Reserve's 'wait-and-see' approach, which has signaled a potential for interest rate cuts in the US.
The RBA's decision comes as Australia's inflation, employment, and housing markets all underperformed expectations. Domestic data showed that headline inflation and trimmed mean inflation came in below the RBA's May forecasts, while labor and housing markets proved weaker than anticipated.
