RBA Interest Rate Hike Looms as Economists Predict Pressure
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is expected to raise interest rates for the fourth time this year, potentially taking the cash rate to a 15-year high. Economists are increasingly predicting a rate hike by the end of September, with Macquarie Bank joining prominent financial institutions in forecasting an increase.
Chief economist Ric Deverell noted that the RBA appears to believe that the economy's output may exceed its potential, suggesting action is necessary to bring inflation back in line with target levels. Assistant governor Sarah Hunter and Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser have also hinted at a rate hike, emphasizing the importance of achieving the RBA's 2-3 percent inflation target.
Despite a slight relaxation in headline inflation, which decreased to 3.5 percent in July, this figure remains significantly outside the RBA's target range and exceeded expectations. Hauser acknowledged that public frustration regarding rising prices is palpable, particularly its disproportionate impact on low-income individuals.
