RBA Interest Rate Meeting: Hawkish Tone Expected Amid Ongoing Economic Uncertainty
The Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) upcoming interest rate meeting is expected to be pivotal in determining the future direction of monetary policy. Despite near-unanimous agreement that the cash rate will remain steady at 4.35 per cent, market watchers are eager for new economic forecasts and commentary from Governor Michele Bullock.
Morgan Stanley's Australian chief economist Chris Read expects a hawkish tone from the board statement, emphasizing the persistence of above-target inflation and its risk to inflation expectations. However, he notes that the softer domestic demand outlook should temper this message somewhat.
The quarterly trimmed mean, at 3.6 per cent, is still well above the RBA's two-to-three per cent target range, but a lower-than-expected figure in June has prompted traders to slash odds of further rate hikes this year. Despite better-than-expected inflation data, Governor Bullock will want to keep the door open for future rate increases, given uncertain economic conditions.
Commonwealth Bank head of Australian economics Belinda Allen warns that the re-escalation in the Middle East conflict risks reigniting inflation after it eased in June. The weaker demand environment is also expected to limit businesses' ability to pass on higher costs.
