RBA Leaves Rates Steady Amid High Inflation Concerns
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has left interest rates unchanged at 4.35% as expected, but warned that high inflation remains a concern and could lead to further rate hikes.
In its unanimous decision, the RBA acknowledged some recent signs of cooling inflation, but stated that price pressures still remain high and are likely to persist in the near term.
The central bank cited high fuel prices, stemming from the Iran conflict, as a major driver of price pressures. It also noted that Australian financial conditions have tightened after recent rate hikes, but inflation remains too high and is only expected to reach its 2-3% annual target range by end-2027.
The RBA emphasized that it will continue to take necessary measures to bring inflation back to target, including increasing the cash rate target further if upside risks materialize. Capacity constraints also remain a point of concern for the central bank.
