RBA Pause Gains Momentum as Australia's Job Market Loses Steam
Australia's job market has cooled down in July, with unemployment rising to 4.5% and employment falling by 15,800. This slowdown is a crucial indicator that could strengthen the case for the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to pause its rate hikes.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that while economists had expected a modest increase in employment, the actual numbers showed a decline. The jobless rate edged up from 4.4% to 4.5%, which is a key figure for policymakers and investors.
Private-sector wages rose by only 0.7% in the June quarter, the slowest pace since 2021. This suggests that wage growth is no longer accelerating, which could help take some heat out of inflation.
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia described the figures as a labor market 'on a solid footing' but moving closer to balance. However, the ABS warned that July's survey had a smaller sample than usual, so the month-to-month moves may be noisier than investors and policymakers would like.
