RBA Ponders Preemptive Rate Hike Amid Strong Inflation Data

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is considering preemptive tightening measures to mitigate inflation risks, according to TD Securities.

In a recent analysis, Prashant Newnaha at TD Securities noted that the RBA's August minutes were overall less hawkish than June but still emphasized upside inflation risks and the possibility of preemptive tightening.

The discussion around preemptive action gained momentum following the strong July CPI release, which added weight to the potential for a rate hike by year-end or as early as next month.

Newnaha stated that if the RBA judges the inflation forecast risks to be significantly skewed to the upside, it may be appropriate to tighten monetary policy preemptively.
