RBA Rate Hike Uncertainty: Inflation Slowdown May Stall Further Increases
Australia's inflation rate has slowed down to 3.5% in July from 3.8% in June, according to the ABS. This modest reduction could give the Reserve Bank reason to be cautious about another rate hike next month.
The RBA target band for inflation is between 2-3%. Economists said that trimmed mean inflation remained unchanged at 3.6%, which could indicate entrenched inflation and potential future rate hikes.
Housing and food prices were the largest contributors to annual inflation, with increases of 5% and 3.2% respectively. However, some sectors showed enough of an inflation slowdown to suggest growing headwinds for the economy.
RBA governor Michele Bullock had earlier announced that the door remained open to rate hikes, but today's figures may halt this decision at least until the next RBA meeting in September.
