RBA Rejects Recession Fears Amid Housing Slowdown
Reserve Bank of Australia assistant governor Sarah Hunter spoke at The Australian Financial Review Property Summit on September 8, 2026. She stated that the housing market slowdown is affecting the broader economy and will lead to a decrease in new home construction.
However, Hunter rejected claims from developers that the housing downturn was pushing the country into recession. Despite the economic concerns, the RBA board could increase interest rates when it meets later this month due to persistent cost increases.
