RBA Survey Reveals Widespread Confusion Over Interest Rates
A new survey conducted by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has revealed that many Australians are confused about how monetary policy works, particularly when it comes to interest rates and inflation.
The survey, which polled 9,000 people over two years, found that only 25% of respondents correctly believed that higher interest rates would lower inflation. Instead, more than half thought higher interest rates would increase inflation.
RBA Governor Michele Bullock noted that 'inflation is still too high' and that the central bank has a responsibility to explain its actions in simple terms. She emphasized the importance of understanding how monetary policy works, particularly when it comes to interest rates.
The survey found that inflation was by far the biggest economic concern among respondents, with two-thirds ranking it among their top three concerns. However, there were also some positive findings, including high levels of trust in the RBA's decision-making process and a good understanding of its role in setting the cash rate.
