RBA's Inflation Strategy Criticized for Hurting Vulnerable Australians
The Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) strategy for tackling inflation has been criticized by Dr. Mark Diesendorf, an environmental scientist and economist. According to him, raising interest rates is a blunt tool that can hurt those who are least able to absorb higher costs.
Diesendorf argues that the RBA's approach is based on a flawed assumption that there exists a unique non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment (NAIRU). He claims that this notion is poorly based and has been used to justify increasing interest rates, which can lead to higher unemployment.
The economist points out that raising interest rates will have little effect in controlling inflation caused by supply shocks, such as wars, pandemics, or shipping disruptions. Additionally, it may even drive an increase in inflation in some circumstances.
Instead of relying on interest rates, Diesendorf suggests that governments should address profiteering by implementing price controls, taxing excess profits, and increasing competition. He also recommends focusing on ensuring the basic necessities of life remain affordable, such as food, energy, medical care, education, and housing.
