RBI Rate Hike Odds Rise Amid Global Monetary Policy Tightening
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may raise interest rates in October due to changes in the domestic and global macroeconomic environment. According to a report by Emkay Global Financial Services, this rate-hike cycle is expected to be shallow.
The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in October is now seen as a live one, with the odds of a rate hike higher than earlier. The recent shift in foreign currency non-resident inflows has exceeded expectations, reaching around $136 billion.
Brent crude oil prices have also climbed above $100 per barrel amid renewed tensions in the Middle East. At the time of reporting, Brent crude was trading at around $107.06 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose 3.2 percent to around $103.30 a barrel.
The European Central Bank (ECB) raised interest rates last week, and the Bank of Japan (BoJ) and the US Federal Reserve are also expected to follow with rate hikes. This backdrop makes the RBI's October MPC meeting crucial, as it could help align the RBI's monetary policy stance with its liquidity management measures.
