RBNZ Boosts Interest Rate for Second Straight Meeting
New Zealand's central bank, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ), has raised its key interest rate for the second consecutive meeting to curb inflationary pressures. The official cash rate (OCR) was increased by a quarter percentage point to 2.75%. This decision was widely expected and aligns with the RBNZ's goal of returning inflation to the 2% target mid-point while supporting economic growth and employment.
The RBNZ's post-meeting statement emphasized the need for gradual monetary stimulus removal. The bank's new forecasts indicate a chance of one further quarter-point hike before the end of this year. This move aims to balance the risks to medium-term inflation, which is currently above target.
