RBNZ Cuts Rate Hike Ambiguity with Cautious Tightening Path
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has raised its official cash rate (OCR) by 25 basis points to 2.75%, as expected, in a move aimed at preventing fuel-driven inflation from becoming entrenched.
RBNZ policymakers stressed the need for caution and retained a tightening bias, signaling that further rate hikes remain possible. They argued that gradual tightening now would reduce the risk of having to raise rates more aggressively later.
The RBNZ expects to stay data-dependent ahead of its next Monetary Policy Statement (MPS) on October 28th, with key releases including 2Q26 GDP on September 17th and 3Q26 CPI on October 22nd.
