RBNZ Hikes Cash Rate Amid Mounting Economic Risks
New Zealand's Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) raised its cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.75% on Wednesday, signaling more tightening ahead due to mounting risks in the economic outlook.
RBNZ Monetary Policy Committee member Carl Hansen said the interest rate hike was a clear consensus decision among policymakers, who agreed that monetary conditions had been stimulative and action was needed to reinforce their commitment to returning inflation to target.
Hansen noted that the RBNZ's forecasts for GDP growth of 1.9% in the year to March 2027 and 2.6% in the following year are 'pretty good', with exports and business investment expected to generate spillovers into weaker regions.
