RBNZ Raises OCR to 2.75% Amid Widespread Inflation Concerns
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has raised the Official Cash Rate (OCR) by 25 basis points to 2.75%, marking its second consecutive hike in an effort to curb inflationary pressures.
In a widely anticipated move, the RBNZ's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to increase the OCR from 2.50% as part of its strategy to return inflation to its 1-3% target band by mid-2027 and the 2% midpoint later next year.
The decision was reached after a consensus among the six MPC members, who judged that gradually removing monetary stimulus is necessary to support growth and employment while avoiding unnecessary instability in output, employment, interest rates, and the exchange rate.
Economists had predicted the 25 basis point increase, citing concerns over inflation, which rose to 4.1% in the June quarter, driven by higher fuel prices due to the Middle East conflict.
